UA-CON WINS AT THE CLHRDC ORAL RESEARCH PRESENTATION COMPETITION

Level 4 Student Nurses Trisha Ocampo, Aira Sonza, Erica Serrano, Jayson Respondo and Jane Mewryale Sanchez bagged the 3 rd prize on the student category of the Central Luzon Health Research and Development Consortium (CLHRDC) Oral Research Presentation Competition last April 25-26, 2018 at the Royce Hotel, Clark Freeport Zone, Pampanga. Paula Marie Magcalas, Sunshine Belleza, Christian Quizon and Nikkaela Castro also made it as finalists on the same category of the regional contest. The participants were assisted by Dr. Arnel Sicat, Director for Research and Planning, Dr. Emmanuel Bagtas, Research Professor, Dr. Melanie Junio, Thesis Adviser, Mrs. Anele Mallari Mallari, Dean of the College of Nursing and Mrs. Maria Cristina Basilio, Researcher for Technology Transfer.

The CLHRDC recently celebrated its 10 th year anniversary with the slogan: A decade of better health, better people through collaborative health research and innovation. It is an association of various government line agencies, hospitals and higher educational institutions in Central Luzon with the main thrust of strengthening the collaborative efforts among these private and public institutions in improving the health conditions of the people through enhanced undertaking of health research and management activities.

Balingit, UA Program Chair of AB Communication, presented his research titled: “Media and information literacy competency assessment of teaching personnel at the University of the Assumption” in a colloquium where Dr. Edna R. Calma, Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences (SAS), served as the peer reviewer. To provide additional suggestions for the improvement of the manuscript were Dr. Arnel T. Sicat, Director for Research and Planning and Dr. Emmanuel M. Bagtas, Researcher for Academics and Publication. The research paper was then presented in the 14th International Conference on Literature, Education, Humanities and Social Sciences at Cebu City, Philippines last June 14 and 15, 2018.

Suba, UA Dean of the College of Computing Sciences and Information Technology (CCSIT), presented his research titled: “Agrilink: An On-Line Market Place System for Farmers and Consumers” in a colloquium. Present during the colloquium to provide additional suggestions to further improve the manuscript were Dr. Arnel T. Sicat, Director for Research and Planning, Dr. Emmanuel M. Bagtas, Researcher for Academics and Publication and Ms. Maria Cristina D. Basilio, Researcher for Technology Transfer. The research paper was then presented in the International Conference for Engineering and Technology at Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts last May 22, 2018.


UA HOLDS SEMINAR ON INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS

April 18, 2018

University of the Assumption (UA) Research and Planning Office (RPO) organized a seminar on Intellectual Property Rights for teaching and non-teaching personnel on April 18, 2018.

The activity was held to promulgate knowledge on the various aspects of intellectual property rights in academic research and to encourage educators to collaborate in future R&D (Research and Development) projects.

Mr. Buenaventura D. Marcelino Jr. of the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHIL) talked about trademark, copyright, patent, technology transfer and commercialization.

“This seminar is part of the initiatives to update our technical knowledgeand legal insight on protecting creative works or innovations developed in the academe,” said Mrs. Maria Cristina D. Basilio, UA-RPO Researcher for Technology Transfer.

Dr. Mediatriz D. Martin, Vice-President for Academic Affairs; and Mr. Arnel T. Sicat, Director for Research and Planning also graced the event.

The seminar was spearheaded by Mrs. Basilio; Mr. Emmanuel M. Bagtas, Researcher for Academics; and Mr. Joel Q. Calaguas, Researcher for Institutional Planning and Evaluation.

The four authors awarded during the University of the Assumption Employees’ Service Award were Mrs. Maria Jocelyn Y. Arrozal, Dr. Grace C. Sadac, Fr. Victor Nicomedes S. Nicdao and Dr. Joey M. Suba. The research topics come from different areas of specialization and include the titles: “An assessment on the existing program offerings of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs): A route to global competitiveness?”, “3Crypt: A developmental tool for complex encrypting and decrypting of data” and “Suffering and the empowering grace of the Lord”.

Dr. Nilo T. Bugtai from De La Salle University-Manila was the main lecturer of the biomedical device and information, communication and technology (ICT) seminar held last August 4, 2016 at the College Audio-Visual Room of the University of the Assumption. This research activity has inspired future health development innovators to submit their research proposals to the Central Luzon Health Research and Development Consortium (CLHRDC) which may be endorsed to the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD) for funding.

Dr. Arnel T. Sicat, the Director for UA Research and Planning, Mrs. Anele C. Mallari, the Dean of the College of Nursing and Mrs. Melanie O. Junio attended the Central Luzon Health Research and Development Consortium (CLHRDC) Planning and Advisory Board Meeting last January 30-31, 2017 at the Subic Bay Peninsular Hotel, Subic Freeport Zone. This two-day activity enabled the members to discuss important matters pertaining to the major accomplishments and future directions of the consortium.

Reve. Fr. Joselito C. Henson, University president, signed the Memorandum of Agreement for the research project titled “Prototype development in the irrigation, drainage, and drying of wounds”.

The research team is composed of Dr. Emmanuel M. Bagtas, Engr. Joselito S. Rosario, Engr. Marvin O. Mallari, Mrs. Anele C. Mallari, Mrs. Cherry B. Lazatin, Dr. Neil C. Tanquilut and Engr. Eugene Borbajo.

This collaborative research and development (R & D) proposal on biomedical devices of the University of the Assumption (UA) and Pampanga State Agricultural University (PSAU), will be funded by the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD). The 12-month project has an estimated cost of half a million pesos.

Dr. Arnel T. Sicat, Director for Research and Planning, Mr. Joel Q. Calaguas, Researcher for Planning and Evaluation, Mr. Jesus Z. Figueroa, Network Administrator of the Center for Information and Technology Laboratories, and Mrs. Dolores D. Mallari, Associate Professor of the College of Education, have participated in the National Paper Conference at the Saint Mary’s University last January 23 & 24, 2015.

The research paper titled: Barangay Constituents Information System (BCIS): Toward Achieving Organizational Efficiency was presented in the topic domain of Best Practices on Governance and Information Technology. Mother Tongue-Based Instruction in Teaching Mathematics was presented in the category of Mother Tongue-Based Instruction (MTB) and Multi-lingual Education (MLE).

Dr. Arnel T. Sicat, the Director for Research and Planning and Mr. Joel Q. Calaguas, Researcher for Evaluation and Institutional Planning, have reviewed the research proposals of College of Engineering and Architecture (CEA) professors and students last February 16, 2017 at the Research and Planning Office Conference Room.

Three proposed titles were: Development of plant box system using Arduino, Solar-powered mobile charging system and Automatic ignition key lock system with breathalyzer. TRAINING ON PATH ANALYSIS/STRUCTURAL EQUATION MODELING USING AMOS

Dr. Arnel T. Sicat, Director for Research and Planning, Emmanuel M. Bagtas, Researcher for Academics and Joel Q. Calaguas, Researcher for Institutional Planning and Evaluation attended a training on path analysis/ structural equation modeling using AMoS.

The training included lecture and hands-on demonstration. It is essential in higher quantitative researches which involve the use of path analysis or structural equation modeling.


SEMINAR WORKSHOP ON ANIMAL HANDLING AND IACUC PROTOCOL REVIEW PROCESS

Dr. Emmanuel M. Bagtas, the Researcher for Academics, Mrs. Anele C. Mallari, the Dean of the College of Nursing, Ms. Maria Justina S. Gonzales, the Chair of Sciences in the School of Arts and Sciences and Mrs. Melanie O. Junio attended a seminar on animal handling at Pampanga State Agricultural University (PSAU) last December 16, 2015.

The topics of discussion were about care and handling of laboratory mice and rats; and animal care and use program. Its scope included common strains, sexing, identification, restraint, drug administration, blood collection, euthanasia, waste disposal and protocol making.


SEMINAR WORKSHOP ON DEVELOPING DEPARTMENT RESEARCH PRIORITY AREAS

In response to the promotion of research culture in the university and challenges of ASEAN integration, the Research and Planning Office (RPO) held a seminar-workshop on developing department research priority areas to the deans, teachers, guidance counselors and librarians last October 26, 2015 at the Social Hall.

Dr. Arnel T. Sicat, Director of Research and Planning Office, discussed the ten-year research agenda while Mr. Emmanuel M. Bagtas, Researcher for Academics, updated the current research undertakings of the UA Faculty.


SPSS TUTORIAL NETWORK PROGRAM

Research and Planning Office

Based on the Training Needs Assessment (TNA) provided to the employees of the university, seminars in Special Package in Social Sciences (SPSS) were deemed necessary to be held. SPSS is a comprehensive and flexible statistical analysis and data management solution. It can take data from almost any type of file and use them to generate tabulated reports, charts and plots of distributions and trends, descriptive statistics and conduct complex statistical analyses.

Dr. Arnel T. Sicat, Director for Research and Planning, Mr. Joel Q. Calaguas, Researcher for Planning and Evaluation and Mr. Emmanuel M. Bagtas, Researcher for Academics have provided hands-on seminars to 16 administrators and employees of the university. It is an ongoing activity to train at least 64 teaching and non-teaching personnel who periodically evaluate activities.


TRAINING WORKSHOP ON ETHICS REVIEW ON ACADEMIC RESEARCH WITH HUMAN SUBJECTS

Emmanuel M. Bagtas, the Researcher for Academics and Cherry B. Lazatin, clinical instructor from the College of Nursing, have attended the National Training Workshop on Ethics Review on Academic Research with Human Subjects at the Conference Room of National Institutes of Health(NIH) at The University of the Philippines Manila (UPM) last April 13-15, 2015.

It is the first of its kind in a series of training workshops provided by the UP-NIH. Most of the participants during the national training workshop were medical practitioners.

The topics discussed in the seminar were national ethical guidelines and local regulations, principles of good research practice and good clinical practice, principles of research ethics, GCP protocol template with ethical consideration, ethical role of investigator, ethical issues in intervention vs. observational research, ethical issues in public health/community research, conflict of interest, confidentiality issues, vulnerability issues, risk/benefit assessment, informed consent, ethics review, ethical issues in quantitative research, qualitative social research, clinical trials, publication, laboratory and genetic research.
